Grusson deposit
The following report was adopted by the records committee and is filed with its annexes. The annexes are not reproduced here.
1. Circumstances of receipt
1.1. The carton was found on the counter of the Mantilly cooperative's office before opening hours. No sender is indicated on the carton or on any document inside it, and no member of staff recalls accepting it. The date of receipt is taken from the morning it was found, there being no other.
1.2. The carton contains sixty-three documents, inventoried at Annex A in the order in which they were removed. They fall into three groups: delivery slips, reservation pages, and one press cutting. The name Benjamin Grusson, or the signature B. Grusson, appears on forty-one of the sixty-three. The committee refers to the whole as the Grusson deposit for convenience, and records that nothing establishes that Grusson assembled it, deposited it, or knew of it.
2. The delivery slips
2.1. Thirty-one delivery slips of a grocery trading at Lacoste. Each slip is stamped GAILLARDGROCERY, in one word, without a space. Whether the stamp abbreviates a name of the form "Gaillard grocery" or reproduces a registered style is not settled by anything in the carton (Annex B, item 4). Each slip is signed B. Grusson on the line reserved for the delivering employee.
2.2. Each slip records the address served and, in a second column headed corresp., a second address at which no delivery is recorded. The pairing of each address with another at which nothing is stated to have happened has been compared to the structure of Manfred. The comparison is entered at Annex B and is noted, not endorsed.
2.3. The slips are numbered. The numbers are not in date order, and not in route order so far as routes can be reconstructed from the addresses. The sequence matches no criterion internal to the slips, which is the condition under which External ordering describes an order as imported. If a source was used, it has not been identified.
3. The reservation pages
3.1. Fourteen pages torn from the reservation book of a cafe at Suresnes. The printed heading gives the establishment's name as Jaure's cafe; the apostrophe is printed, not written, and no accent is used. The pages carry reservation entries for eleven distinct party names. No entry is marked seated, cancelled, or charged.
3.2. The committee checked the eleven names against the eleven names of the Composite sheet. No name is common to the two lists. The coincidence of count is recorded at Annex C, and no weight is placed on it.
3.3. One page carries, written sideways in the margin, the words reservation held. For whom, and by whom, is not stated.
4. The cutting
4.1. One newspaper cutting concerning a wedding at Corme-Royal. The caption describes the occasion as a celebrity wedding and identifies the groom only as an actor. The portion of the caption that would have carried names has been cut away, cleanly, before receipt. The photograph shows the party from behind. Nothing else in the carton refers to Corme-Royal.
4.2. The distances from Corme-Royal to Lacoste and to Suresnes were measured and the figures compared with the Appendix of intervals, both as read under the Kilometre reading and without it. Neither figure appears in the appendix. The check is entered at Annex D so that it will not be proposed a second time.
5. Disposition
5.1. The deposit is held as received, in its carton, in the order of the Annex A inventory. It is not catalogued.
5.2. The committee recommends review in twelve months, and sooner if any document arrives that refers to the deposit or to any name in it.
5.3. One member recorded a dissent, holding that the deposit should be returned. To whom it would be returned was not resolved, and the dissent is entered without action.
