Laughing Tote

On 8 June 2024, an usher glued a one-euro token to the terrazzo floor beside the Laughing Tote at Palace Athena. Thirteen guests stooped for it before the joke was discovered. The counter’s floor camera also detected the token and began adding two prize credits every eleven seconds.

The Laughing Tote had been supplied by EpicGamerHQ for a school fundraising evening. Players used cardboard money for betting on Rhinoscopy, a projected race between six rhinoceroses distinguished by coloured saddlecloths. The counter accepted wagers, sounded a brass bicycle horn and delivered numbered vouchers through a rubber flap.

Its casing had previously belonged to a livestock auction terminal. A maintenance screen still offered a chattel setting, although the supplier said this function had been disabled. The event supervisor, Gina Louise Bosmond Nolan, switched the machine from automatic to gamic control at 18:34. Credits continued to rise. At 18:41, the displayed total reached 1,862 and every rhinoceros was declared the winner with magnificent impartiality.

Examination

The supplier removed the glued token at 19:05 and covered the camera with an opaque cup. The credit total advanced twice more, then stopped at 1,866. No corresponding wagers appeared in the session report.

Gina Louise Bosmond Nolan authorised all vouchers issued before 18:34 and cancelled the later batch. Whether the camera initiated the payout or the dormant auction setting resumed operation was not established. EpicGamerHQ collected the counter on 10 June and returned 27 pencil cases to the organiser on 2 July.
