Novelty-seeking tools

When composing a soundtrack, it is quite common that, at some point (usually near the end), I tell myself:
“What if I now make a track using a tempo and time signature that have not yet been used in this project, in a key that has barely appeared so far, etc?” I find this kind of self-imposed constraint creatively interesting.

However, on large projects , it can become difficult to manually investigate these tendencies, so I built a few tools to help with the process.

What tempi to use

tempiDisplay screenshot
tempiDisplay lets you visualize the tempi already used in a project (entered manually or tapped in real time), along with divided and multiplied equivalents, and suggests new tempi chosen to be as far as possible from the existing ones.

(requires Processing)

What notes to use

affChroma screenshot
affChroma displays the combined chroma features of a collection of audio files.

This makes it easier to identify pitch classes that have been underused so far, and to focus future tracks on less represented harmonic areas.

(requires Python)
