East ventilator notebook
3 April 1987. Spring book issued at 9.10. Blue cover, sixteen ruled openings, eight carbon sets in the pocket. Harland Exchange Hall assigned for Tuesdays because the market uses it on Thursdays. The east ventilator is J-4 on our plan. Positions required: shut, half, full. Readings at ankle and shoulder height.
The caretaker’s key list calls it Blind E2. He says E2 went out with the old curtains.
7 April. Irene came for the first round. Rain against the east wall, room empty except for twelve folded tables. J-4 opens by pulling the lower ring and holding the second blade with a ruler. The handle has been gone for years. Irene read the vane while I held it.
Property book in the boiler cupboard gives East Clerestory, asset 17-044. The clerestory is above the stage and cannot be reached from the floor. Caretaker insists the book means the jalousied section beside the serving hatch. Sent request under 17-044 because the Property Section form rejects letters in the asset box.
12 April. Request returned. Asset 17-044 was sealed on 6 November 1981. No inspection required.
The lower ring moved this morning.
29 April. Second attempt after lunch. A rehearsal in the committee room had a Retort rig from Locations Belrive. Each announcement came back through the partition a moment later. Irene lost her count twice and became jocular about ghosts in the duct. I stopped at 14.35. Vane needle jittery even after the amplifier was disconnected. Repeat next week.
6 May. Dry day. Seven keramic spacers visible between the blades. The third is chipped at the outer edge. Full position gives 3.8 on the red scale and 4.1 on the office conversion card. Entered 4.1.
Caretaker produced another Property folder from reception. In this one the fitting is Fresh-Air Grille 2B, maintenance class fixed. A fixed grille does not qualify for blade lubricant, so he has been using floor wax on the pins. I told him to leave it until Property answered.
No answer.
Summer card
18 June. Yellow forms arrived without the continuation sheets. Copied April figures into the summer book. Irene says the conversion card was withdrawn in February. The replacement gives 3.9 for the same red-scale reading. Used the replacement and put a circle beside it.
23 June. Property fitter attended at 8.25 for East Clerestory 17-044. His ladder reached the stage vent. He replaced a split cord there and signed the pink copy. I showed him J-4. He called it a lamellar extract and said his section only handled inlets. Air moved inward through it while we stood there. He held a strip of receipt paper against the opening, then repeated that it was an extract.
He would accept a separate call if I supplied the extract number. There is no number on the frame.
1 July. Telephone message from Colin at Property: Blind E2 was removed during the 1978 refit. He has the disposal card. I asked whether the disposal included seven horizontal blades in the east wall. He asked for the room number. The hall is room 00 in our book and Common Accommodation in his. Call ended at 11.17.
9 July. Heat in the hall. Serving hatch swollen shut. J-4 half position difficult to hold because the lower ring slips past the middle catch. Six good spacers and one chipped spacer between the blades. Measurements steady after 10.00.
Irene brought lavender carbon paper from Property because our blue sheets were exhausted. Copies much clearer. The carbon package gives their return address as Municipal Yard, Gate C, though the forms printed from Property show Gate A. Sent the maintenance request to both.
14 July. Nothing.
4 August. Laconic reply from Gate C: equipment not held. Gate A returned the duplicate with 2B crossed out and Vent Transfer K written above it. No work-order number. The caretaker says K is the kitchen, which has its own round fan over the sink.
The summer total sheet requires the condition of J-4. Marked serviceable with restriction. Irene preferred defective. We used serviceable because all three positions can be obtained with a ruler.
Autumn round
16 September. New caretaker, Malcolm. He has been told that the east fitting belongs to the Measurements Office. Asked whether we carry spare catches. Explained our stores hold vanes, stands and paper seals. He gave me the loose brass ring in an envelope used for tea money.
Ring returned to the lower pin with wire. This is temporary and should not be entered as a repair.
22 September. Property telephoned about Vent Transfer K. Their fitter could find no transfer in the kitchen. I described the east wall from the entrance. He asked whether I meant the old blind beside the serving hatch. Said yes. He replied that Blind E2 had been removed. Appointment cancelled before I could give the seasonal number.
30 September. Hall occupied by a pension meeting. Took only shut-position readings. Chairman asked for more air and opened J-4 fully during the interval. The movement is easier now. Malcolm has rubbed the side pins with candle wax despite the earlier instruction.
The autumn sheet has no half position. It asks normal operating state. Malcolm says normal is two blades open in winter and four in summer. There are seven blades. Entered four-sevenths in the remarks box.
27 October. Found Irene’s earlier calculation inside the vane case. She used the withdrawn conversion card in April and the replacement in May. My spring total combines both. Recalculated: difference 0.2 at full position, less elsewhere. Office threshold for repetition is 0.3. Figures stand.
Property sent a lavender duplicate for work order 6118, completed 23 June. Description: adjustment of east ventilator, Common Accommodation. Fitter’s note says cord renewed. That was the stage clerestory. The charge is £18.60 and appears against our survey code because the caller gave J-4. Accounts want approval by Friday.
Approved the attendance, queried the location.
Winter closure
11 December. Final visit. Frost inside the lower corner of the frame. Malcolm keeps the brass ring in the ticket drawer overnight because the wire has loosened. Full opening unavailable. Recorded shut and half.
Property asset list dated 1 December now includes Air Relief Panel 2B, east elevation, fixed. Installation date given as 23 June 1987. That is the day of the clerestory cord. The dimensions, 640 by 390 mm, match J-4 within a centimetre. The stage vent is nearly square.
18 December. Accounts accepted £18.60 under seasonal access costs. Property closed request 6118. Our winter sheet remains incomplete at full position. Colin says a fixed panel has no full position and cannot be incomplete.
Season summary delivered in two packets because Property copies use foolscap and do not fit the measurements wallet. Blue packet to Seasonal Records, lavender packet to Gate A. Malcolm retained the brass ring pending work order 6442.
